History

History – A quick snapshot
Created in 1973 by the Australian Government as a key strategy in the revival of the Australian film industry, AFTRS is the only institution of its kind in the nation – with professional, industry standard, film, television, radio and production facilities all under one roof and a curriculum that spans all of the specialist areas that comprise this exciting and dynamic sector.



With the goal of being the heart of the screen arts and broadcast industry AFTRS is located in a new, state of the art building, situated amidst production houses, studios (adjacent to Fox Studios, and close to galleries studios and other leading creative institutions and colleges).

AFTRS has a long history of offering high end training and short courses for industry through its open program, and has occassionally run short courses for interested amateurs. Changes in technology and the opportunities and possiblities it affords in combination with the interest in our industries has led to increasing demand from the public for AFTRS to open it’s doors to everyone through short courses and introductory courses.

With this in mind Open has worked hard to expand and develop courses for kids, teens and the public whilst ensuring it meets the needs of the professional industry. All AFTRS short courses are taught by industry professionals and experts and are designed not only to inform and teach but be terrific fun. Check out whats on offer and expand your horizons!
