MAKING THE LEAP: FROM PRODUCER TO SERIES PRODUCER.
A Factual Television Series course for Producers and Directors with significant production experience.

A good Series Producer is the lynchpin for factual series television – working directly to the Executive Producer. They are responsible for generating the vision for the series, communicating it, working (on a day to day basis) with the team during all stages of production, keeping the show on vision, on budget and on schedule.

This two-day course will introduce experienced Producers and Directors to the world of a Series Producer during pre-production, production and post-production. Series Producers MANAGE production – so this course will NOT involve filming or editing exercises. Relevant production experience is necessary.

It’s a hands-on, practical course and, by the end, participants will:
• have the basic skills to write a series bible,
• be shown how to produce a basic schedule,
• be shown how to draw up a basic budget,
• know how to think 360° Production,
• be introduced to managing post production,
• have tips on how to handle the Broadcaster,
• and be introduced to a myriad of the other stuff they need to know.

The course will feature interview clips from some of Australia’s leading Executive Producers and Production Managers – along with a couple of high profile guest speakers who will answer questions to help participants embark on a learning curve, perhaps leading to more senior production roles.

This course is presented by Denise Eriksen who has been in senior television management roles in Australia for the past seven years – as Head of Factual at ABC TV, Head of Production and Development at SBS and Head of Current Affairs at ABC News. Her Australian credits include: “Choir of Hard Knocks”, “Operatunity Oz”, “Cook and the Chef”, “Peking to Paris”, “First Australians”, and “The David Hicks Story” – and a string of weekly series.

Denise ran this course in Sydney recently and here is what some of the course particpants said:

“A very positive experience for someone already employed as a Series Producer. Denise was a great teacher.” “Honestly, I did not expect it to be this good...The Practical element was excellent and the structure of the course was very good.”
